I have a confession to make.
I am a terrible blogger.
Back in September, I was lucky enough to be invited to the product launch of Cherish Skincare, and their facial night oil, which I absolutely adored and had been using religiously until it got lost when my partner Clark and I moved house. Never fear, however, because it showed up unexpectedly a couple of days ago, and my love for it has since been re-kindled.
Shortly after the night oil launch, Cherish were kind enough to send me a sample of their next big thing – a pillow spray with the same beautiful fragrance of lavender, vetiver and ylang ylang. As many of you will know, I suffer from a health condition called fibromyalgia, and I’m forever trying different products out to make living with the condition easier.
This was back at the end of 2017 – but I’ve been completely useless and have yet to write a blog post on it! I can only apologise to the lovely team at Cherish for missing Fashionably Late by a country mile – but I have been using it, and I have been loving it!
I’m no stranger to sleep deprivation. Unfortunately, despite one of the main symptoms of my condition being chronic exhaustion, it goes hand in hand with sleep difficulties – struggling to get to sleep, struggling to stay asleep and then, at the other end, struggling to fully wake up. Even before my diagnosis, I knew that something about my sleeping habits wasn’t completely right, but I couldn’t ever work out why. I tried a few things – Ovaltine, Horlicks, various calming teas, yoga, meditation and finally, herbal sleeping tablets. Nothing really seemed to help – until I was diagnosed with fibro, and I finally found out the reason for my terrible sleeping pattern.
That was the beginning of a vicious circle. The less sleep I got, the more tired I got and the harder I found going to sleep in the first place . My already shockingly bad short term memory and concentration got even worse, and I was constantly cranky, irritable and generally sad. I now know that a large portion of these were down to my condition, but even though I now have the answer to my problems, I do still sometimes struggle to get to sleep. In a weird backwards kind of way, if I’ve overdone it during the day, I generally find it more difficult to get to sleep – I’ll be kept awake by pain for example, or my headspace is too noisy and distracting to properly switch off. I’d tried pillow sprays in the past with no joy (specifically an own-brand one by Boots. I was a little sceptical about it’s effectiveness, so I didn’t particularly want to splash out on an expensive brand if there was no guarantee it would help me.) During the original product launch, I expressed my excitement to Mel when she mentioned they were developing a pillow spray – and was very kindly sent some shortly after it’s release!
Now, scent is one of those weird things that can trigger things psychological – not necessarily always in a bad way, like the smell of smoke or gas, but smell and memory are intrinsically linked with one another, which is why one may often feel a sense of nostalgia and comfort when presented with a particular aroma. Personally, I’ve definitely found this ring particularly true with the scent of the pillow spray.
The last couple of months of my life have moved quite quickly. Clark and I moved in together in November, but in the months before that, I was spending quite a lot of time at his house as we strengthened our relationship. Around the time of the Cherish launch, things were beginning to get really, really serious – I was gradually “moving in” – as in I’d pop home, shove enough clothes into a bag for a few days, stay at his house until I ran out of underwear and then repeat the process, gradually increasing the time-frame. Obviously this wasn’t ideal, and we started talking about moving in to a proper home together.
This may sound like it has absolutely no relevance to the Cherish Pillow Spray at all – but all throughout this time, I was using the facial oil every night. The gorgeous scent of it has cemented itself deep in my brain, so now whenever I smell it, I’m transported back to then, living in Clark’s bedroom at his mum’s house, binge watching The Office (the US version obviously) and finding out that this was, in fact, the real deal. It’s turning out that the pillow spray is, for me, is like a bottled memory. Not only do the mixture of natural herbal scents do their job biologically speaking, the associations that I now have with the smell do their thing psychologically too – which is honestly the most comforting, relaxing thing of all. Also, whenever I catch a whiff, my mind and body associate the aroma with bedtime, and I’m instantly more relaxed.
If you’d like to pick up either one of Cherish Skincare’s products, you can check out their Etsy store. There’s also a lot more info about the products and the people on the Cherish Skincare website, including some tips and tricks to help those struggling with sleep, and how to give the perfect facial massage. I honestly can’t recommend their products enough – especially if like me, you have trouble drifting off to sleep at night – and it’s always good to support small businesses!
Thanks once again for reading, and profuse apologies to Cherish Skincare for the ridiculous amount of time it took me to write this!
Until next time,
